Hello Droolers!

Do you love food?  So do we!  And we enjoy exploring all of the cuisine available in and around the Coastal Bend.  It seems new restaurants and dining opportunities continue to pop up all around us and we look forward to each new experience.
But we only care about one thing.
We don't care if it's $5 or $500. We don't care what the bathroom looks like, or even if there is one. We don't care if the server is knowledgeable or rude. We don't care about the decor, plates, or lack thereof. We only care about one thing.
When it hits your palate, does it blow your mouth up? Does it make your jaw drop until you realize that the food is spilling out? Does it make you close your eyes for a moment? When it does, you'll know. And all of the dishes on this blog will make you drool.
Welcome to Drooldish!

Pollo Asado - El Gavilan Pollero

A friend, David Garza, recommended this place for chicken.  When I thought about having chicken for lunch, I wasn't exactly excited, but I like chicken, so whatever, right?  Gotta eat...  We drove around until we finally located the trailer... "El Gavilan Pollero."  It was on the corner of Port and Ruth.  As we pulled up, we had that redneck moment of excitement when we decided to eat on the tailgate.  The lady who took our order totally hooked us up - newbies to the Pollero, we were unaware of the "call ahead" situation.  Yeah, they stay busy and there is a serious reason for that!
Wow, not even out of the bag, and it smells killer. I'm salivating. The scent of charred meat is creating a gutteral reaction. With toasted peppers, and smoked onion, grab a tortilla, and put all that in your mouth. The beans are super flavor, and stands up to the perfect seasoning on the asada.
The chicken is cut in such a way that each bite includes just the right amount of seasoning and charring. The first bite of perfectly stewed, perfectly seasoned beans is an explosion of flavor in your mouth. The chicken is grilled with Serrano and onion... The aroma.  Oh, the aroma!
The crew preparing your meal has been perfecting this dish for thirteen years and it shows! You won't want a thing about this meal to change!
Post asada feelings. I look around me, and I see people, lots of them, and as I look into their eyes, the mere thought that they may NOT have ever had that perfectly charred chicken... It saddens me, deeply...

Open: Thurs - Mon 12-9pm
Closed: Tues & Wed

The orders can often take an hour to grill. you should call ahead to place your order: (361)-442-7606

It's on the corner of Port & Ruth
821 S. Port Ave
Corpus Christi, TX 78405

There's no real parking, and for sure nowhere to eat. It's meant to be more of a pick it up, and take it home. BUT that's not how we roll. We recommend tailgating it. There's nothing like perfectly grilled chicken, and an ice cold beer on a sunny afternoon. So, about that beer... BYOB.

This place is the real deal! You are absolutely correct and your post needs to be updated. ;-) Because it's no longer run out of a trailer in this area. They now have a building in the same location.
I've never been a fan of grilled chicken, but this place has definitely changed my mind.

Grant and Lori moved to Corpus Christi in 2012 and have been exploring the available cuisine ever since.  Because dining out is something they love to do together, Grant had an idea for a food blog of all the best foods in Corpus.  If you have suggestions for something they simply MUST try, use the "Make a Suggestion" page or Facebook page!
